Let’s be real—loving kids is a must in this job, but it’s not the whole job.
As a career nanny, you’re not “just a babysitter” or “just playing all day.” You’re a developmental cheerleader, a routine wrangler, a boo-boo fixer, a snack artist, a part-time therapist, and sometimes even a stand-in parent. In short—you wear a lot of hats, and none of them are boring.
So, whether you’re just getting started in the nanny world or you’ve been in the game for years, here are the essential skills every great nanny needs to have in their toolbox (besides being able to sing “Wheels on the Bus” nonstop on command).
You have to be able to communicate clearly—with parents and kids. Parents want to know how the day went, what their child ate (or didn’t), how that nap went, and what you’re noticing in their child’s development. And toddlers? They need your patience, your listening ear, and sometimes your ability to translate a tantrum into actual words.
Pro tip: Daily updates (even just quick texts or a shared notebook) go a long way in building trust and keeping everyone on the same page.
Yes, children have big feelings. And so do parents. A great nanny can read the room, stay calm under pressure, and respond with empathy (not just react). Understanding how to support a child through a meltdown—or a parent through a stressful week—is what separates a good nanny from a great one.
Routine is a nanny’s best friend. But so is the ability to pivot when a nap gets skipped, the science project explodes, or the baby decides 5 a.m. is a perfectly reasonable wake-up time. The best nannies can keep a rhythm without falling apart when the beat changes. Flexibility and adaptability are two must-have qualities for nannies.
Whether it’s figuring out how to get three kids dressed and out the door in 20 minutes or turning a rainy day into an indoor adventure, thinking creatively and staying solution-focused is a huge part of this job. Quick thinkers thrive here.
Also, a Band-Aid and a distraction? Magic combo.
You are the master of the daily flow—meals, naps, playtime, school pickup, and activities don’t magically happen on their own. A skilled nanny knows how to plan a day that works for the child, respects the family’s priorities, and still leaves time to clean up the Play-Doh before it turns into a carpet feature.
You don’t need a Ph.D., but you do need to understand the basics of how kids grow, learn, and behave at different stages. This helps you choose the right activities, spot delays, and support milestones like potty training, language development, and emotional regulation.
If you want to go above and beyond, invest in some professional development or certifications. (CPR and First Aid are a must. Courses in infant care, behavior, or even baby sign language? Bonus points.)
Being a nanny is an intimate job, but it’s still a job. Show up on time, respect the family’s home and privacy, follow through on commitments, and communicate like the amazing professional you are. Leggings might be your uniform—but your attitude should still say “I take this seriously.”
You’ll be covered in spit-up, have full conversations about Paw Patrol, and probably get peed on at least once. Laughter helps. So does patience. A career nanny knows when to laugh it off, when to take a breath, and when to just sit on the floor and be fully present with a child who needs a little extra love that day.
Community matters too! Find your go to support system so you can vent, cry, laugh, brag, and chat about all the highs and lows that come with being a nanny.
Being a nanny isn’t for the faint of heart—but it is for those who love deeply, think creatively, and are committed to making a real impact in a child’s life. If you’re constantly learning, showing up with your full heart, and giving kids the safe, silly, stable environment they need—you’re already doing the most important thing right.
Keep growing. Keep showing up. You’ve got this.
